Nellore is a city in Andhra Pradesh and seat of the Sri Potti Sri Ramulu Nellore district. Historically, Nellore has been seen many rulers. It used to be called Vikrama Simhapuri and it was a part of the kingdom of Mauryas, Ashoka, Pallavas, Cholas, Arcot Nawabs and finally Madras Presidency under British rule. After independence, Potti Sriramulu, a freedom fighter from Nellore took a fast till death for the creation of Andhra Pradesh. Nellore has also contributed towards Telugu language infact Tikkana Somayaji, one of the greatest Telugu poets hailed from Nellore and translated the Mahabharata into Telugu.

Population
Nellore has a population of 580, 150 as per the 2013 census. Out of this total population 8.321% percent is under 6 years of age.

Weather
Nellore is very close to the Bay of Bengal at 25 kms and experiences hot and humid summers and mild winters. Rainfall occurs in October and November and is prone to cyclones during this time.

Places to See
You must visit the Talpagiri Ranganatha Swamy Temple, Kodandarama Swamy Temple, Gayathri Devi Vishwakarma Temple, Mallikarjuna Swamy Kamakshi Temple and Vedagiri Lakshminarasimha Swamy Devastanam. Another place you must visit is Penchalakona – a sacred pilgrimage centre where Lord Narsimha himself has taken form as a huge rock in Yoga Mudra. If you are a nature lover, you can visit Somasila Dam and the picturesque Pulicat Lake. Pulicat lake is separated from the Bay of Bengal by the Sriharikota Space Station, one of the satellite launch centres of India. Nelapattu Bird Sanctuary located in Nellore district is one of the largest habitats of Pelican birds.

How to Reach
By Road
NH5 passes through Nellore, thus putting Nellore enroute between Kolkata and Chennai. The city is one of the zonal headquarters of APSTRC and has 2 bus stations - RTC bus station – all interstate buses stop here; and PSR or Atmakur Bus station where all the buses that ply within Andhra Pradesh make a stop.There are frequent buses to Chennai and Bangalore from Nellore.

By Train
Nellore is an important station in south India. It connects Tamil Nadu and Kerala to North India, Bengal, Bihar and the North East. Most major stations are connected to Nellore and there are frequent trains from Chennai and Vijayawada to Nellore.
